Role Summary

We are seeking a Lab Technician in our Packaging Engineering Department who will help with all aspects of lab functions. The Technician will coordinate, prepare/condition materials for, and execute thermal tests according to a test protocol written by a TemperPack Thermal Engineer, The technician will also analyze testing data and perform preventative maintenance/calibrations on testing equipment. This position reports to the Packaging Engineering Manager, and is based in Richmond, VA.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinate preparation and execution of thermal testing protocols for internal and customer test requests.
  • Collaborate with other internal departments, external vendors and local retailers to gather raw materials needed for testing.
  • Use TemperPack’s sizing specifications product calculators to construct and quality control check samples that are to be used for testing.
  • Use customer and/or industry specific temperature profiles to program and operate thermal test chambers.
  • After test completion, disassemble test samples while accurately documenting any abnormalities or interesting findings.
  • Use statistical and trend analysis to determine test outcomes, recommend future steps and formulate customer suggestions.
  • Maintain proper documentation of lab equipment, maintenance, and calibration.
  • Perform regular lab clean up and ensure that lab’s 5S standards are being maintained.

Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • 1 to 2 years of lab experience conducting tests against a protocol, preferably in a thermal and/or packaging lab environment.
  • A fundamental understanding of thermodynamics.
  • Understanding of a scientific and testing methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to work with hands using power equipment such as electric cutting tools, hydraulic presses, CNC cutting tools, 3D printer and environmental test chambers.
  • Ability to multi-task and juggle several projects at the same time.
  • Ability to take measurements using rulers, calipers, laser thermal sensors and digital scales.
  • Ability to work with minimal direction.
  • Minimum AA in Science or other Technical degree.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift 40 pounds unassisted.
  • Able to reach, bend, kneel and climb while performing repetitive tasks
  • Ability to work in hot and cold environments
  • Able to correctly wear PPE for entire shifts
  • Able to react and respond quickly to noises, smells, visual hazards, and alerts
